There are numerous ways in which the average family can help to positively affect the environment and become greener. We have all heard of ways such as: turning off taps, turning off lights, and using cold water. These are things that anyone can do at any age, however, there a number of other more advanced possibilities which could make an even larger impact on our environment. Some of these possibilities include: switching to tank-less water heaters, using geo-thermal heat instead of propane or gas, checking and correcting drafts when possible, using energy efficient light bulbs, and ensuring that appliances are energy efficient. Firstly, by switching to a tank-less water heater the amount of energy needed to heat water is drastically cut. A tank-less water heat only heats the amount of water needed and used, where as, a water heater with a tank must constantly heat the water and is always using energy. To continue, geo-thermal heating heats a person’s house through the heat under ground. This is much more efficient and less dangerous to the environment than using propane or gas to heat the home. Third, by checking for drafts in doors and windows and through correction, you will find that your house will maintain its heat much easier and this will cut down on your heat usage and energy levels. Next, energy efficient light bulbs last longer and take up much less energy than the average light bulb. Lastly, switching over to more efficient appliance, such as washers, dryers, dish washers, and fridges, will save a large amount of energy use. If every family did half of the suggested solutions on this list, there will be an enormous change in our battle against global warming. In continuance, there a large number of energy sources besides the big one everyone knows as oil. Some of these solutions are: solar power, wind, and geo-thermal. Alternate modes of transportation are another large way of helping to reduce our carbon foot print. People could potentially car pool when possible, or take public transit. People could walk or ride their bicycles if they are in a certain proximity to their final destination. There are a number of different possibilities of people set their minds to it and get creative. It is everyone’s responsibility to help protect our environment. The Earth is comparable to an enormous team. If some people on the team choose to stop playing, then they have basically switched sides, which would be global warming, but if everyone does a little bit and helps out where they can, then we can not lose. The last thing we want is to make it to overtime and have the other team get a break away and score because our defence stopped trying and did not do their part. Without our Earth what will do? Where will we go? How will we survive? Everyone knows the saying not to do your business where you eat, but is that not what is going on with our planet? Every day people litter, pollute, poison our environment, but if you can do something, then do it. This is our home and by following just a few of the suggestions above, you are making a difference.
