With the earth’s resources depleting at an alarming rate, saving energy has become one of the most important and crucial aspects of today’s life. However, becoming eco-friendly does not have to be a life altering hassle. Not only does adopting a green lifestyle mean saving the Earth, it also means saving money because a large part of living green involves using energy efficiently. There are a few easy changes the average family can make to positively affect the environment, and put more cash in their pocket.
Living the green lifestyle begins with using less energy. By using less energy there will be less fossil fuel emissions into the environment. Weather proofing your home, turning off unnecessary lights, and using cold water and the “old fashion clothes line” when washing clothes, are simple changes for the average home, that will save money and benefit the Earth. Installing solar panels and switching to energy efficient appliances are another step a family can take to effectively use energy. Carpooling to soccer games or planning out daily errands will make efficient use of both time and fuel. Saving fuel is easier on the pocket book and it also cuts down on exhaust emissions. This can also be done by switching to electric or hybrid vehicles, or riding a bike.
Making other small changes inside the home is another step to a green lifestyle. Switching to “green” cleaning products reduces toxic chemical. The ingredients in most of the best selling cleaning products contain chemicals harmful to the environment as well as the family. Today, there are several lines of “green” cleaning products that do as good, and in some cases, a better job of cleaning than the popular brands, and use less harmful chemicals. Using less water during showers, baths, and washing dishes can eliminate unnecessary wasting of water. Families can also avoid using paper plates and plastic utensils, after all these only end up in a land fill.
Recycling is another easy way to help the environment. Reuse plastic shopping bags, recycle aluminum, paper, and plastics, all of these things will reduce the amount of fossil fuels used and help keep the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air at a minimum. Planting trees is natural way to replenish the Earth’s natural cycle. Trees reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and add oxygen, planting them can do nothing but help.
For hundreds of years humans have brought about huge changes in the environment. In our efforts to improve the quality of our lives, we have polluted the waters, the land, and the air. Right now, our actions are catching up to us. The nature of our atmosphere is being irreversibly changed by our own hands. The greenhouse effect may be the most serious environmental problems the human race has ever experienced.  However, just by implementing these simple changes the average family cannot only save money, but can save the Earth as well. If everyone would just do one small thing, the impact could be enormous.
